Dear Palm

I am writing to you because I’m sure you get all kinds of mail about how much discontent people have for your products like the Palm Treo 650. Well I’m here to tell you that I have a story of pure joy and a pat on the back for your product design team.

Two nights ago I was Alta Plaza Park in San Francisco(see photo). This is a beautiful park in the Pacific Heights District near my house. I go there at night to look at the city and gather my thoughts.

On this particular night I was fiddling with my iPod case as a I was walking down the long cascading stone steps that are true symbol of the park. As I was fiddling, I happened to drop the case on the stairs. When I bent over to pick it up my Palm Treo 650 slid out of the breast pocket of my jacket. The next scene was sheer horror. I watched and listened as my phone crashed down the stairs picking up speed as gravity got a hold of it. When the phone came to a rest, 12 stairs later, I stood there in shock not wanting to walk down the stairs to see the Treo murder scene. When I finally gathered myself to venture down the stairs I found three scattered pieces. The battery, the phone, and the backend battery case. I assembled them all back together, as a “what the hay”, maybe it will work. To my shock the Palm booted right up!

I was delighted. The design of the Treo allowed for almost no damages. The corners obviously took the blunt force of the 12 stairs and looking closer you can tell that a lot of great engineering went into making the corners strong. Also, because the screen is recessed, it suffered no cracking and was spared from a single scratch. Pure brilliance.

I went through a couple of checks like listening to my voicemail, making a call, etc. It all checked out! And lastly, I snapped a picture of a friend.

All good! But don’t get too excited. You still do some things arse backward. Why do I have to buy clunky software(Missing Sync) to make my Treo bluetooth with my Mac? And why partner with Windows? And the sound and camera quality…… :) Anywho, that is not important right now.

Thanks Palm, I’m a very satisfied customer.
